INGREDIENT NOTES
- Russet potatoes: these are the best potatoes for this recipe. They crisp well and they also have a soft fluffy inside once cooked.
- Olive oil: this adds some great texture, tastes great, and adds a nice crisp to the fries in the air fryer.
- French fry seasoning blend: a homemade blend of garlic and onion powder, with Paprika, pepper, and salt is a great combination of spices for these home fries.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
- Prepare 4-5 large potatoes by rinsing, slicing (like a fry) ยฝ inch thick, and add to a bowl medium-sized mixing bowl.
- Rinse sliced potatoes two times.
- Add water and fill to the top, covering the fries so they donโt brown.
- Soak for up to 1 hour before cooking.
- Drain off the water after an hour and pat the fries dry. I like to use a tea towel, toss so many in at a time give them a good shake, and pat dry with a paper towel or another tea towel.
- Once potatoes are dry, add to a clean bowl, toss in olive oil, and the spice blend.
- Set aside the bowl. Preheat your air fry to 400F for 3-4 minutes.
- Spray the basket with spray oil, layer in your potatoes (DO NOT OVERLAP THEM), set temp to 380 degrees Fahrenheit, cook for 8 minutes, toss fries and cook for another 8 minutes.
- Continue this until all fries are cooked, about 4 times.
- To keep the fries warm while waiting for the rest, add them to a sheet pan set the oven to 275 Fahrenheit, and place the fries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to keep them warm.
- Serve with your favorite dip!
EXPERT TIPS
To make the best air fryer fries, use Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes. Cut the potatoes about ยฝ inch thick for the best size French fries in the air fryer. That way they cook all the way through and have a nice and crispy outer texture.
Ensure the potatoes are dried, and evenly coated with both olive oil and the spice blend. You can always add a little more seasoning if you choose.
Keep in mind that all air fryer brands differ. This Ultrean Air Fryer is my favorite air fryer. You may need to add 2-4 minutes to the cooking time or maybe 1-2 minutes less.
SERVING TIPS
The best way to serve these home fries is with ketchup, ranch, spicy sauce, Thai chili sauce, or any other dip that is your favorite. Depending on what we are serving these fries with always depends on what we dip.
These fries also make for some great breakfast potatoes. They pair great with breakfast, brunch, or lunch!
STORAGE TIPS
Store air fryer home fries in an airtight container for 3-4 days, to maintain freshness. Simply reheat the fries in your air fryer at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 4-6 minutes.
You can also reheat in the microwave but this may result in soggy fries. Reheating in the air fryer is the best option for this air fryer French fry recipe.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS
Soaking the potatoes once they have been cut and rinsed is one of the key steps here! Soaking the potatoes ensures the starches are released into the water and out of the potato for a nice crispy outer texture and fluffy inside center once cooked.
SUBSTITUTIONS
You can certainly use another potato like red or yellow potatoes. However, Russet or Yukon gold will give you the best results when it comes to having the perfect texture for air fryer home fries.
You can simplify this recipe by using salt and pepper, for a simple seasoning. The Paprika, garlic, and onion powder make these fried potatoes extra tasty!
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQโs)
As mentioned above, Russet or Yukon Gold are the best potatoes for this recipe. They get nice and crispy.
Yes, it is recommended that you pre-heat the air fryer. This will ensure that the fries cook evenly with the heat evenly heated throughout the fryer.
No overcrowding the basket in the air fryer or overlapping the fries will really help ensure that your fries are extra crispy. Flipping them halfway through the cooking time also helps ensure that the fries are crispy on all sides.
